TIMELINE

•September 20, 1880—Elizabeth Kenny is born in Warialda, New South Wales.

•1909—Assumes the role of a qualified nurse.

•1911—Opens a cottage hospital at Clifton.

•1911—Begins her travels as a bush nurse.

•1911—Treats first polio patient.

•1915—Volunteers to serve in the Australian Army Nurse Corps.

•1919—Supervises a temporary hospital to care for victims of the 1919 influenza epidemic.

•1925—Adopts her daughter, Mary Stewart.

•1926—Designs and manufactures the Sylvia stretcher.

•1937—Opens and operates many treatment centers supported by the governments of New South Wales, Queensland, and Victoria.

•1937—Widespread polio epidemic begins in Australia; travels to care for the victims.

•1938—Report of the Queensland Royal Commission is released condemning the Kenny method for treating polio.

•1940—Sister Kenny is dispatched to America by the Queensland premier.

•1942—Sister Elizabeth Kenny Institute is established in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

•1943—Receives the honorary degrees of doctor of science by the University of Rochester and doctor of humane letters from New York University.

•1946—Rosalind Russell stars in the movie Sister Kenny, about Kenny’s life.

•1949—Sister Kenny Memorial and Children’s Playground are unveiled.

•1951—Named the woman whom Americans admired most in the world; returns home to Toowoomba, Australia.

•November 30, 1952—Kenny dies of Parkinson’s disease at the age of 72; Sister Elizabeth Kenny “Fight Against Polio” seal is issued (see the beginning of this chapter).

•1955—Sister Elizabeth Kenny Foundation is established.

•1963—Sister Elizabeth Kenny Art Show for Artists with Disabilities.

•1975—Sister Elizabeth Kenny Institute merges with Abbott Northwestern Hospital.

•2014—Sister Elizabeth Kenny Memorial Fund provides scholarships to students attending the University of Southern Queensland; Sister Kenny Rehabilitation Associates in Minneapolis remains in operation.
